Umm Gamar reef with its crescent islet, the moorings on the south plateau (14-24 m) with the three small glassfish ergs on its eastern corner, the usual dive east to the drop-off and north along the wall to the three chimney pinnacles and back on the current, caves in the east and west walls and the coral garden at the northern tip. Reef, islet, light and mooring come from OpenStreetMap; the features and route from dive-centre site descriptions (divers-guide.com, redseacreatures.com), placed by description, so the plateau extent and the erg and pinnacle positions are approximate. Umm Gamar means mother of the moon, for the crescent shape of the small island that breaks the surface at the top of it. What you dive is the rest of the mountain: an isolated reef rising from deep water, roughly T-shaped, about 90 minutes north of Hurghada by boat.

The southern plateau at 14–24 m is the usual dive — a coral garden with turtles, batfish, Napoleon wrasse and morays, and enough small ergs to keep the navigation interesting. To the west the plateau is shallower and broken into little sub-reefs. The northern end falls away into current and depth.
