The sandy bay inside Washington Slagbaai park with a reef along each headland, the old Washington-plantation pier foundations at 8-12 m, elkhorn at 5-8 m and the reef wall from about 15 m to 30-40 m; the route (south along the reef, out, north, back in) follows the bonaire.com site guide. The reef edge and the pier line are approximate; the elkhorn spot is placed on the north reef by assumption. Coastline and dive-site markers © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). Playa Funchi is inside Washington Slagbaai National Park, the terrestrial park occupying the whole north-western end of Bonaire. Getting there means the park entrance, the one-way dirt loop, and an hour of driving — which is why it is empty.
The bay is shallow and calm with a reef on each headland, and it is known above water as much as below: large green iguanas come down onto the sand and the rocks and are entirely used to people.
Dived 15 August 2012 to 25.9 m.
Note: diving at several Washington Slagbaai sites has since been restricted because of stony coral tissue loss disease, and gear sanitising is now required.
