🇪🇬 Gabr el Bint

Dahab, South Sinai, Egypt

The far southern site, reachable only by boat, jeep or camel — which is why it is the least damaged reef on the Dahab coast and the only one with a genuinely serious deep side.

Reef table, the sand tongue at the shore entry, the 3 m lagoon, coral heads and the two usual loops (south and north), placed on the OpenStreetMap coastline; positions and depths are approximate. The deep south side (wall to 60 m with chasms and overhangs) and the gorgonian boulder field on the north side at 20-25 m are described for the site but not drawn. Gabr el Bint — the girl's grave — lies well south of Dahab with no road to it. You get there by boat, by 4×4 over the desert, or on a camel, and the hour or two that takes is the reason the coral is in the condition it is. It is dived far less than anywhere else on the coast and it shows.

The site has two distinct halves. The south side, which divers call the dark side, is a steep wall dropping to 60 m and beyond, cut by chasms, sandy ravines, caves and overhangs — a serious piece of water, and the one place on this coast other than the Blue Hole where depth can get away from you. The north side is shallower and far more colourful: a forest of gorgonians among massive fallen boulders, generally worked at 20–25 m.

Dived 9 August 2008 to 31.3 m for 55 minutes, the second dive of the day. The first, that morning, was logged as 2 km south of Gabr el Bint and went to 27.6 m.
