🇫🇷 L'Anse au Blé

Giens, Hyères, Var, France

A rocky drop-off with a seagrass flat above it, dived by boat from Giens — and probably spelled "wheat cove" rather than "blue cove".

The west face of the Escampobariou headland at the tip of the Giens peninsula; coastline and lighthouse from OpenStreetMap. The dive-site position (43.031848, 6.096302) and the mooring on a buoy flush with the cliff just before the Pointe d'Escampobariou come from the Var tourist board (Provence Méditerranée) sheet, which also gives the drop-off to about 40 m; the posidonia flat on the shoulder and the rocks come from first-hand observation. The drop-off line, seagrass area and route are schematic; the sea caves the sheet mentions are not placed because their position was not found.

A rocky drop-off running from about 14 m to 26 m, with a Posidonia seagrass flat on the shoulder above it, dived by boat out of Giens.

The log writes it L'Anse au Bleu — blue cove — but the name on the charts is L'Anse au Blé, wheat cove, which is how it is recorded here.

The Posidonia oceanica meadow is worth more than it looks. It is a flowering plant rather than a seaweed, endemic to the Mediterranean, it grows a few centimetres a year, and the mats it builds can be thousands of years old. It is also the nursery for most of what lives on the rock next door.

One dive, 16 July 2018, to 19.5 m. The position used to be Saint-Sardos, inland Occitania.
